The Most Likely Causes
Listed in rough order of how often they turn out to be the culprit — not a diagnosis of your specific machine. Work top-down: the cheap, free checks first, then test before you buy anything.
Wrong mode — defrost or low power
The most common "not heating" that isn't a fault: the microwave is set to defrost or a low power level, so it cycles on and off and barely warms. Free to rule out.
Door not latching / bad door switches
Microwaves have interlock switches that must all confirm the door is shut to power the heating side. If the door doesn't latch firmly it may run the fan/light/turntable but not heat.
Failed magnetron
The magnetron is what actually generates the microwaves. When it fails, everything else runs but nothing heats. Often accompanied by a buzzing or burning smell before it quits.
Blown high-voltage diode
The diode helps convert power to the voltage the magnetron needs. A blown diode kills heating (and sometimes hums/trips the breaker).
Failed capacitor
The high-voltage capacitor stores the charge that drives the magnetron. It can fail — and it can hold a lethal charge for a long time even unplugged. This is the danger part.
Test → Estimate → Test
Good techs don't swap parts and hope. They test, price it out, then confirm. Do the same and you won't buy the wrong part — or pour money into a machine that isn't worth it.
1 · Test before you buy
Confirm the suspect part is actually bad — a multimeter continuity check, or a clear visual like a split element or a cracked gasket. Never replace on a guess; that's how the returns pile up.
2 · Estimate honestly
Add up the parts plus your time and compare to a new unit. A cheap part in a well-built machine is a yes. A pricey control board in an old one may not be. Be honest with yourself here.
3 · Test again after
Once it's installed, run a full cycle and confirm the fix before you button everything back up. Two minutes now beats taking it apart twice.
